Why Sir Paul McCartney made some friends cry with details of his new album

At 83, Sir Paul McCartney can be forgiven for wanting to look back occasionally and not forwards.

The Beatles legend rarely stops working whether it be live shows, noodling around in his home studio in Sussex or writing books and advising on new projects about the Fab Four.

But for this first new track, and the album it seems, he has gone back to where he once belonged.

He has also seemingly stripped things back too, so it is just him playing all the instruments and singing wistful words straight from the heart. Paul’s unmistakable vocals occasionally sound a little frail now, but even this fits into the song, which feels honest and heartfelt.

The overall sound of new single Days We Left Behind is warm and gentle, the lyrics are touching.

Fans of Paul like myself want him to be immortal and to go on forever, but there are signs here that he is aware more than ever of his own mortality.

When he sings in the chorus “Nothing stays the same, no one needs to cry” it’s hard not to feel immediately sad or emotional about the days we have all left behind with loved ones.

I’m told when Paul and his team shared the track to some of his inner circle before its release there were tears in the eyes of a couple of listeners.

And having been to a couple of funerals myself recently, it certainly got me reflecting on life and gave me a lump in my throat on the very first listen.

But the track is not completely gloomy by any means and instead is a chance for Paul to look back on his life before the Beatles, for him perhaps it seems like another life or another person he is singing about now.

The album The Boys Of Dungeon Lane will feature other songs and lyrics in a similar theme about his childhood and I am told he also sings about his parents, Jim and Mary, who died decades ago now but are no doubt still often in his thoughts.

In the single Paul sings no one should be blamed, and also that no one can erase, the days we left behind.

And he’s right.

For many people memories are the most valuable thing in the world. Sir Paul must have more incredible memories than most people get in a lifetime. But hopefully there’s still time to make many more, including some on stage and in the studio.
