Moments before surrendering and going to Tihar Jail, Rajpal Yadav made an emotional confession, which came as a big shock to the industry. The actor revealed that they are facing a severe financial crunch and have no one to turn to for help. For the unversed, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, to serve a six-month prison sentence in connection with a Rs. 9 crore debt and cheque-bounce case.

After Rajpal’s emotional appeal, actor, Sonu Sood stepped I to support Rajpal Yadav. Sonu, who is known for his charitable work, clearly stated that his move was not charitable but rather an emotional support for one of his own. Taking to X, Sonu penned a note and shared his support for Rajpal as he wrote:
“Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us..producers, directors, colleagues to stand together. A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, it’s dignity. When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone. This is how we show we are more than just an industry.”

In 2010, Rajpal Yadav took a loan of Rs. 5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his 2012 directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film tanked at the box office, and Rajpal failed to repay the loan. In April 2018, a Magisterial Court convicted him and his wife, Radha, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. After seven cheques issued to the complainant bounced, the actor was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment.

The conviction was upheld in 2018, but despite a revised petition, the legal troubles only intensified. The debt rose from Rs. 5 crores to Rs. 9 crores. By October 2025, Yadav deposited Rs. 75 lakh via two demand drafts, but most of the liability remained unpaid. On February 5, 2026, Rajpal surrendered to the Tihar Jail authorities to serve his six-month sentence.

In a report by Bollywood Hungama, Rajpal Yadav made a statement and revealed his financial woes despite working for so many years in the industry. The actor even revealed why he never asked for financial aid from his industry mates and stated:
