Started losing vision in Class 8, faced difficulties in writing, battled rare genetic disorder, cracked UPSC exam with AIR..., he is..

Many people consider the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination to be one of the most difficult exams in India. Millions of people apply for the exam each year, but only a select handful of aspirants are able to crack the exam. However, in this article, we will discuss the motivational story of one person who did not allow his vision impairment to become a disadvantage. Yes, we are talking about Manu Garg, who lost his eyesight in the eighth grade.

Manu Garg, residing in Shastri Nagar, Jaipur, has now become an officer in civil services. He has obtained an All India Rank (AIR) of 91 in the 2024 UPSC Civil Services Examination. This achievement, however, is not only due to Manu; the success came about because of his mother, who stood by Manu throughout the process and directed him like a beacon of light. Manu clarified how important his mother’s support was in his endeavors.

In the 8th grade, Manu lost what was left of his vision and could not see the blackboard. After many consultations with doctors and specialists, nothing seemed to help. He was finally diagnosed with a very rare genetic disorder that destroys the retina, but this did not happen overnight–it felt like each day was walking into a nightmare.

According to the LIVEHindustan report, Manu Garg attended St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur. He obtained a degree in Political Science from Hindu College, Delhi University. After completing his degree at Delhi University, he pursued a master’s degree at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During his college days, Manu Garg won over 150 debate competitions across the country and was known as a star debater.

Next, let’s discuss how Manu prepared for the UPSC exam. He utilized technology to support his studies. Manu used screen readers, TalkBack tools on his phone, audio PDFs, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. With these tools, he successfully prepared for one of India’s renowned and competitive examinations, the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Manu Garg took the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2023, but the outcomes were not in his favour. He passed the Prelims in his first attempt, but he couldn’t clear the Mains exam. Nonetheless, he did not lose hope. He selected Political Science and International Relations for his optional subjects.
Throughout this time, his mother was supportive and acted like a rock for him. She attended to him by reading from books aloud to him and aided him in organizing his study materials. On his second attempt, Manu made history by achieving All India Rank 91.
