The Adolescence star has hit out at Hollywood actors who act in an ‘exceptionally disrespectful’ manner on set as his co-star Owen Cooper takes home a SAG-AFTRA award
Stephen Graham has slammed some stars of Hollywood as “exceptionally disrespectful” following “disgusting” behaviour on set. The Adolescence actor spoke to the audience at a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Panel in Los Angeles, explaining that he doesn’t like it when actors do not turn up to set on time.
The 52-year-old actor shared: “There are a lot of actors that aren’t on time. That’s exceptionally disrespectful, to leave a crew that have been there well before you and will leave well after you, waiting around because you are some Lord and Saviour and the goose that lays the golden egg.”
He added: “I think that’s exceptionally disrespectful – one, to leave your fellow actors but two, to leave the crew waiting. To leave the crew waiting is disgusting.”

Stephen explained that the crew don’t get woken up and driven into set like many actors. They have to drive themselves in and will likely leave after the actors.
“They’re getting paid nowhere near as much,” he continued. “They’re doing what they’re doing because they love what they’re doing. And you can’t actually do what you do without them.
“So don’t take the p*** and just at least have some respect and be on time. Then if you choose to say ‘Good morning’, that’s your prerogative, but at least be on time.”
Stephen’s words were said as part of a career retrospective with SAG-AFTRA that took place in LA in January, just weeks before the actors’ union would hold their annual awards.
Both Stephen and his Adolescence co-star Owen Cooper were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series at the 2026 awards. Stephen and Owen played a father and son whose relationship became fractured after it was revealed that toxic masculinity had led the teenage son to kill his female classmate.
Owen won the award. Likewise, he won Supporting Actor awards at the Critics’ Choice awards, the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the National Television Awards, all for his role in the Netflix miniseries. As such, the role is one of the most decorated performances in TV history.
Stephen has won awards for the series as well. His include Best Actor awards as the Critics’ Choice awards, the Golden Globes and the Emmys, as well as awards for his role as one of the series’ co-creators.
However, Stephen has said that the “real accolade” is when fathers come up to him to thank him for making Adolescence. Following his wins at the Emmys, he told The Guardian: “Having a fella come up in Tesco and say: ‘I just want to thank you. I had a really good chat with my son the other night after we watched your programme.’ No disrespect but you can keep your awards and all that shiny b*******s. That’s the real accolade.”
