EXCLUSIVE: Steps star Faye Tozer opens up about embracing her milestone 50th birthday, her beauty tweakments and starring in Mean Girls musical
Turning the big 5-0, to some, may seem daunting, but for Steps star Faye Tozer she’s taking it all in her stride – so much so she’s dubbing it “the new 40”. It’s no surprise she’s so optimistic about her age, after all in this chapter of her life she has a lot to smile about.
Faye is blessed with a thriving stage career, a loving son and a job where she can work with her four best friends — her Steps bandmates Claire Richards, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee.
“I am so, so grateful that I feel healthy, I’ve got incredible friends and family, I’m working and I’m blessed because getting old is a privilege,” explains Faye, who turned 50 last November.

“There are quite a few people that I had in my life that aren’t here any more and so every year is an absolute blessing and it’s really empowering as a female to say, ‘I am 50, look what I’ve done, look what an incredible life I’ve led and I’m so excited to see what the next chapter brings.’ I think 50 is potentially the new 40, as they say.”
So what are Faye’s tried and trusted secrets for feeling good? “I try to sleep well as much as I can,” she tells us. “I surround myself with positive people and positive things. I do exercise as part of my job, and that makes me feel good. I like to go out with my friends. Getting older, my body is feeling different nowadays, so I have to pace myself a little bit more, but that’s OK too. That’s all part of it.
“I won’t be doing any backflips anytime soon though and I don’t have to do the splits,” she laughs, remembering the high-energy tours of Steps’ early days.
However, Faye does have a confession to make when it comes to her youthful glow. “I cheat like the rest of them,” she says. “I’m not going to lie and say I don’t have tweakments, because absolutely I do. [Faye has previously discussed having Morpheus8, a form of radiofrequency microneedling done to boost collagen, and has endorsed a Farm Girl Facial, which aims to lift and revitalise the skin using natural ingredients.] It makes me feel good. I don’t do it for anybody else apart from myself.”
Life right now is busy for the former Strictly 2018 contestant. She’s about to embark on a UK-wide tour of the stage musical adaptation of chick flick Mean Girls, playing Mrs George. Off stage, she’s a doting mum to her 17-year-old son Benjamin and, when she’s not touring, lives happily in the North East.
Faye has attempted to get her son interested in the industry she loves, but he’s set on building his own career in engineering, far away from the spotlight.
“I tried him out with all these different musical instruments and I took him to dance classes,” Faye says. “He was interested, but he isn’t somebody who wants to be in the public eye. He is not a natural performer. He’s just his happy, low-key self, and he’s super bright and funny.
“I’m super proud of him and really grateful that he is level-headed and probably more grown up than all of us lot.”
Benjamin is so private, he’s decided to come off social media altogether – something that has delighted Faye. “He said he felt like he was wasting his time, one click led to three hours and he just decided it was a total waste of time and he could be doing better things,” she says.
“His friends and his girlfriend have social media and they do a little bit but he’s not ruled by it. I feel really, really blessed that he hasn’t got that as an issue in his life, but I can see why it is a problem for others.”
When it comes to her band “family”, Steps will always have a special place in Faye’s heart. The group recently came together for the launch of the Steps musical Here & Now.
“We’ve always been grafters,” she admits. “I think the fact that we’re still the original line-up massively helps. We’re doing it because we want to and not because we’ve been told to.
“I think we always felt like we were underdogs. We didn’t ever expect people to keep supporting us. We do our tours, have a breather, have a bit of home life, be parents, and then come back.”
But for now her main focus is treading the boards again in Mean Girls. As well as Mrs George, Faye will also play Cady Heron’s mum and teacher Mrs Norbury.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been more than one character in a show before. So to do three at one time, I felt would be a really funny thing to do,” she laughs. For the character of Mrs George, the outrageous mother of Queen Bee Regina, Faye was inspired by a certain A-list heiress.
“I came across Paris Hilton’s social media page and I was like, ‘Oh my God, Mrs George is Paris Hilton!’ With the pink velour tracksuits and the princess hair. I just thought that was something I could tap into for Mrs George.”
Faye admits the notion of casting celebrities in musicals will always be an “ongoing conversation” but, ultimately, she is confident she has earned her stripes when it comes to performing on stage.
“I think it’s interesting being a female of my age coming from a pop background and seeing what roles there are available for somebody like me. So when this one came up, it was a no-brainer.”
Mean Girls The Musical is touring the UK and Ireland until January 2027, with Faye Tozer performing until 22 August 2026. For tickets, see meangirlsmusical.com
