Students choose for plant-based meals at UK university

Students at the University of Southampton in England have voted to make plant-based meals the default option at their student union catering facilities.

The university’s student council approved the decision, which will start in the 2026/27 academic year.

With the new policy, plant-based meals will be the usual choice at student union food outlets. Students who want meat, dairy, or other animal products can still order them, but they will need to ask for those options.

A student campaign connected to the group Plant-Based Universities supported the proposal. In early February, a petition for the change collected over 950 student signatures in just one week.

Matthew Rochford, a PhD student who backed the change, said the vote shows awareness of the environmental impact of animal agriculture and the need for more sustainable food systems.

Supporters believe this change could lower the university’s carbon footprint and promote more climate-friendly eating habits.

This decision is part of a wider debate at universities in the UK and around the world about food choices, climate change, and sustainability.
