The 16-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment for a pre-existing hand injury, and later interviewed. On Wednesday night, police confirmed they had charged the teen with one count of murder, and he will appear in court at a later date.

It comes after officers charged an 18-year-old man, Alambs Mohmmed, of no fixed address, on Monday over the fatal stabbing. He has been charged with intentionally causing injury, affray, escaping custody and theft.

Mohmmed faced court on Monday charged with intentionally causing injury, affray, escaping custody and theft. The court heard he was meant to be in custody at the time of the alleged offending.

He did not apply for bail and is due to face court again on December 18.

Witnesses told this masthead they saw two offenders chasing a man up and down either side of Maribyrnong Road, before fighting him under a tree as bystanders tried to intervene.

Officers said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the alleged stabbing.
