Hyderabad: In a bid to promote safe motherhood and encourage natural deliveries, Telangana health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha announced that midwifery training programmes will soon be introduced in government nursing colleges across the state.
The minister made the announcement while participating in Safe Motherhood Day celebrations at the Midwifery Training Institute in Boiguda on Wednesday, where he also visited training stalls.
Highlighting maternal care, he said motherhood is a significant phase and the government is responsible for ensuring safe and quality healthcare. He noted that the health of pregnant women is crucial for child development, family well-being and overall societal progress.
The government, he said, is providing comprehensive medical services to lakhs of pregnant women annually through public hospitals. Free antenatal check-ups, scans and diagnostic tests are being offered, along with Iron and Folic Acid tablets, calcium supplements and iron injections to prevent anaemia.
He added that maternal health is being closely monitored to ensure timely check-ups, proper nutrition and counselling, with high-risk pregnancies identified early and provided specialised care. Free transport through 102 ambulance services is also being ensured for pregnant women.
Telangana is making progress under the Anaemia Mukt Bharat initiative, while the Arogya Mahila programme provides dedicated healthcare services to women every Tuesday.
Focusing on reducing caesarean deliveries, the Minister said the government is strengthening midwifery services and has trained 370 nurses. Plans are underway to establish midwifery training institutes in government nursing colleges to expand capacity.
He added that priority is being given to the recruitment of nursing officers, while new nursing colleges are being set up. Students are also being trained in international languages such as English, German and Japanese to improve global employment opportunities.
