Tess Daly and Vernon Kay went down a storm presenting together for the first time in nearly 20 years and an expert believes they have the ‘easy magic’ to make them the next big TV duo

Married couple Tess Daly and Vernon Kay were a breath of fresh air when they co-hosted The One Show – and now a source claims they’re ready to become the next “golden couple” of British telly.

Tess, 56, and her radio DJ husband Vern, 51, were a total revelation, receiving a hugely warm response from viewers when they reunited on screen – for the first time in almost 20 years – to co-host the BBC One show last month.

Standing in for regular hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp, who were filming the BBC’s story-telling competition, 500 words, at Windsor Castle, they were joined by Hollywood royalty Jessie Buckley and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as Bridgerton stars Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha.

And viewers at home were delighted to see the couple, who tied the knot in 2003, sparking off each other on The One Show sofa. One wrote online, “It was so lovely to see you on the TV Tess. I let out an ‘ahhhh’ when I saw you with your lovely hubby.” Another penned, “You did great Tess, hope you’ll be on again soon.”

Other viewers commented, “A brilliant line up and you were so relaxed, be lovely to see you again” and “You and Vern presenting together is everything. Loved it.”

Now, a source is claiming there could be exciting times ahead for Tess, who shocked fans when she stepped down from Strictly last year alongside Claudia Winkleman, and Vern as a couple. “Tess and Vern went down like a house on fire during their recent presenting stint. Vern really wants a primetime telly gig, and Tess is determined to show everyone, especially the BBC, she’s not done yet,” they said.

“Tess knows she’s good at her job and wants to prove that she’s still got it. But she doesn’t want to do this on her own, she co-hosted for years with Claudia and really enjoyed working with her. She adores co-hosting – so whatever the gig, she doesn’t want to go solo.”

Following their triumphant reunion, rumours were rife that ITV could be lining the pair up to take over from Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley on This Morning – but they were dashed when an ITV spokesman responded to the whispers, saying, “We are very happy with Cat, Ben, Alison, and Dermot as This Morning’s lead presenters and there are no plans for that to change.”

Nonetheless, the runaway success of their one-off stint was a clear sign that these two, who share daughters Phoebe Elizabeth, 22, and Amber Isabella Kay, 16, can make TV magic – and have the potential to become the next big husband-and-wife success story.

As our source maintains, Tess also feels that a show where she is paired with her husband could be the perfect move, as she’s enjoyed being able to spend more time with Vern since hanging up her sparkly Strictly hat.

“Tess has really enjoyed being able to see more of Vern after all those hectic years hosting Strictly. They’ve been able to spend more quality time together, and she’s told family and friends that she’d love this to continue – so a job where they host together would be the perfect way of doing it,” said the source.

Eldest daughter Phoebe revealed she had moved to New York at the beginning of January. Given that Tess previously said she was “in denial” about her flying the nest, it will be a tough time for her. Our source added, “Tess is really missing Phoebe since she moved to the Big Apple – so getting stuck into something she loves alongside Vern would also prove the perfect distraction.”

The last time Tess and Vern were seen presenting together before now was on BBC singing competition Just The Two Of Us, which they co-hosted between 2006 and 2007. But The One Show proved that their natural chemistry is still as strong as ever – and fans at home would clearly love to see them bag a regular presenting spot.

“There’s no denying that Tess and Vern have shown they’ve got real chemistry together, like husband-and-wife team Richard and Judy back in the day. They really click,” claimed the source.

“People were so impressed behind the scenes at The One Show, as well as audiences at home, that there have been a lot of whispers about them being the next big thing on TV. They were both very flattered at how their presenting stints went down, and they’ve really got the bug now. It feels like this is their time.”

PR expert Lynn Carratt is in agreement, and told new, “There’s something instantly watchable about seeing a real-life couple share the presenting sofa. Tess brings the polish of a primetime pro after more than two decades on Strictly, while Vernon has that relaxed, cheeky charm that puts audiences instantly at ease.”

She added, “In many ways, they’re like Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan at the height of their daytime TV reign, a real-life couple with that same authenticity: they tease each other, clearly enjoy working together and don’t feel overly polished or rehearsed.

“If broadcasters are looking for the next husband-and-wife partnership viewers can truly invest in, this duo might just have the same easy magic that made Richard and Judy an institution.”
