'The Boys' Season 5: Inside All The Major Twists And Dark Plans From Season 4 Ahead Of The Endgame

The Boys will soon be heading into its fifth and final season, and this time, the world will be darker and more unstable than ever. Season 4 of the series pushed every character to the edge, setting up for the high-stakes finale season. According to reports, Season 5 will feature heated confrontations in which the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters are almost completely erased. So, as we wait for the show to return, let’s take a quick look at where we left off in The Boys Season 4.

‘Homelander’s’ rise to power

In Season 4, ‘Homelander’ continues his transformation from unstable superhero to outright tyrant, after he publicly killed a protester in Season 3. And now, he faces the trial. However, what stunned everyone was his shockingly not-guilty verdict, reinforcing his belief that he is untouchable. On the other hand, his relationship with his son, ‘Ryan’, takes centre stage as ‘Homelander’ attempts to give the latter a childhood he never had. But his warped understanding of love and power only further traumatises the boy. ‘Ryan’ is pushed into violent situations, including accidentally killing someone during a staged rescue.

By the finale, after learning the truth about his mother, ‘Ryan’ rejects both ‘Homelander’ and ‘Billy Butcher’. Meanwhile, he confronted his own past by returning to the lab where he was raised and killing those responsible for his trauma. However, still unsatisfied, he recruits the hyper-intelligent ‘Sister Sage’ to consolidate power, culminating in his political takeover in the finale.

Things turn dark for ‘Billy Butcher’

‘Billy Butcher’ is dying from brain cancer caused by Compound V abuse. However, with only weeks to live, he becomes ruthless, determined to destroy all superheroes, including ‘Homelander’. His mission is dependent on obtaining a virus capable of killing the heroes. But the real twist comes when Compound V mutated his tumour, leading to hallucinations and giving ‘Billy’ some terrifying new abilities, including grotesque tentacles and enhanced strength. In the finale, he kills ‘Victoria’ and drives off with the only sample of the supe-killing virus.

‘Starlight’ turns into a fugitive in the Season 4 finale

‘Starlight’/ ‘Annie’ shifts from hero to political figure as she runs a nonprofit, openly opposing ‘Homelander’. However, she becomes a target of intense smear campaigns led by his supporters. Her past abortion is exposed on live TV, triggering a public backlash. Nonetheless, as she tried to salvage the situation, things further got out of hand as she began to lose control of her powers. The worst wave hits when she is kidnapped and replaced by a shapeshifter. After escaping and stopping an assassination attempt, ‘Annie’ reconciles with ‘Hughie’ but is forced into hiding when Homelander’s forces strike. By the end, she is operating underground, actively resisting his regime.

A personal tragedy for ‘Hughie’

‘Hugie’ faces one of the strongest emotional arcs in Season 4, after his father is left comatose following a stroke. As his estranged mother returns, revealing she left due to postpartum depression, emotions are high for the superhero. However, things worsen as ‘Hughie’ turns to Compound V to save his father, leading to horrifying results as his father gains powers but loses control over them, killing several people. ‘Hughie’ is forced to euthanise him, creating one of the most tragic moments in the season. He further endures emotional turmoil when the shapeshifter posing as ‘Annie’ manipulates him into a relationship.

‘A-Train’ to redeem himself?

‘A-Train’ further undergoes a shocking transformation as he genuinely begins to change. Haunted by his past, especially one of killing ‘Hughie’s’ girlfriend, he starts to help the ‘Boys’. He saved lives, provided critical information, and risked everything to do the right thing. His motivation partly stems from a desire to be a better role model for his family.

‘Victoria Neuman’ and the game called politics

‘Victoria’ continued her double life as a politician and secret superhero assassin. She was now the Vice President and worked with ‘Homelander’ while secretly planning to take over herself. She is the only one with the sole sample of the supe-killing virus, but doesn’t trust ‘Homelander’. However, her position becomes unstable once ‘Homelander’ exposes her truth as a secret superhero. She attempts to switch sides, ‘Butcher’ kills her before she can. Her death is later framed on the President, allowing ‘Homelander’ to strengthen his position in politics. While her storyline highlights the complete collapse of political systems under supe influence, it has definitely set the stage for the grand finale.

What to expect from The Boys as they step into the final season?

By the end of Season 4, ‘Homelander’ effectively controls America through fear and manipulation. Most of the ‘Boys’ are captured, and the team is fractured. While some alliances are broken and identities are shattered, it will be interesting to see how power is concentrated in the worst possible hands. The final season is set up as a brutal endgame in which saving the world may require becoming just as monstrous as those in control.
