Jhalmuri is a popular Bengali street snack made from puffed rice, spices, and fresh vegetables. It’s known for its spicy and tangy flavor, making it a delightful treat. Here’s how to prepare this quick and tasty dish.

Ingredients

  • Puffed Rice (Murmura): 2-3 cups
  • Spices:
    • Kashmiri red chili powder: ½ tsp
    • Cumin powder: ¼ tsp
    • Garam masala: ¼ tsp
    • Chaat masala: ½ tsp
    • Aamchur (dry mango powder): ¼ tsp
    • Salt: to taste
  • Vegetables:
    • Onion, finely chopped: 2 tbsp
    • Cucumber, finely chopped: 2 tbsp
    • Boiled potato, cubed: 10 cubes (about ½ cup)
    • Tomato, finely chopped: 2 tbsp
    • Green chili, finely chopped: 1 (adjust to taste)
    • Ginger, finely chopped: ½ inch piece
  • Other Ingredients:
    • Tamarind pulp: 1 tbsp (or lemon juice for tanginess)
    • Mustard oil: 2 tbsp
    • Fried peanuts: 3 tbsp
    • Sev (crispy chickpea noodles): for topping
    • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped: for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puffed Rice:
    • If the puffed rice is not crispy, dry roast it in a pan over low heat for about 2-3 minutes or microwave it for 60-90 seconds to make it crisp.
  2. Mix the Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the puffed rice with the spices (red chili powder, cumin powder, garam masala, chaat masala, aamchur, and salt).
    • Add the chopped onion, cucumber, boiled potato cubes, tomato, green chili, and ginger to the bowl.
  3. Add Flavor:
    • Pour in the tamarind pulp (or lemon juice) and mustard oil. Mix everything gently but thoroughly to ensure that the puffed rice remains crispy.
  4. Final Touches:
    • Add the fried peanuts and sev just before serving to maintain their crunchiness.
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  5. Serve Immediately:
    • Jhalmuri is best served immediately after preparation to enjoy its crispy texture.

Tips

  • Adjust the spice levels according to your taste preference by increasing or decreasing the amount of green chilies and red chili powder.
  • For added nutrition and flavor, consider mixing in some sprouts or grated carrots.
  • Serve Jhalmuri in paper cones for an authentic street food experience!

Enjoy this flavorful snack as a quick appetizer or a light meal!
