'The Lincoln Lawyer 4' Shocking Finale Sets Stage For Major Family Drama For 'Mickey' In Season 5

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 finale has finally brought a resolution to ‘Mickey’s’ (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) case. From the probability of spending life in prison after a pile of evidence was stacked against him to the finale’s shocking revelation, it has been a long ride. However, he and his team managed to keep his freedom with the help of ‘Maggie’.

While the credit for the big win goes partly to ‘Mickey’s’ crafty thinking, it also meant he was back in the game. With the phone ringing off the hook at his firm from new clients wanting representation. Nonetheless, the drama suggests there’s more to come, as the episode’s final moments introduced a new person in his life who threw him for a loop.

‘Mickey’ has a surprise connection return in the Season 4 finale

After being locked up at the end of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 finale, ‘Mickey’ now had two things on his mind: spend the day driving around, and the evening alone enjoying a home-cooked meal. He even excitedly told ‘Izzy’ that he was ready to try a new recipe. However, as he was enjoying his late-night grocery run, a random woman seemed to be lingering. While she didn’t approach him, the lingering presence was evident to ‘Mickey’ as well, who glanced back and smiled to be friendly.

Despite feeling weird, ‘Mickey’ moved on, that was until the woman approached him at his car. However, before she could share her name, she noticed someone behind the former and yelled at him to duck. Everything that followed happened at lightning speed, from the random woman pulling ‘Mickey’ down to gunshots and the appearance of ‘Agent Dawn Ruth’ (Sasha Alexander). It turns out the Armenians saw ‘Mickey’ as a loose end after the case was resolved, and as suspected, wanted to take him out.

While ‘Agent Dawn Ruth’ told ‘Mickey’ that his “new friend” saved his life, she also let him know that, despite the fact that he played her in the end, she was always going to do her job, which is to protect people. After thanking this woman and marvelling at her great instincts, he finally asked the question everyone has been waiting for: who this person is. Nonetheless, nothing prepared us for the answer. The woman played by Cobie Smulders is his sister.

Introduction of ‘Mickey’s’ sister will unlock his past in Season 5?

Up until this point, ‘Mickey’s’ childhood and life before becoming a lawyer have been a mystery. We know his mother is a Mexican actress and much younger than his father. She has appeared several times in Season 4 to support her son and even helped her granddaughter by taking her to Mexico. She also dates and falls in love quickly. On the other hand, ‘Mickey’s’ father died long ago, and he followed in his footsteps to become a cutthroat criminal defence lawyer. ‘Legal’ (Elliot Gould), his father’s former partner, became a mentor and father figure to ‘Mickey’, and the pair remained close throughout his life.

‘Mickey’ often sought ‘Legal’s’ counsel when he needed a third-party opinion, legal or moral advice, or just someone to reassure him that he was doing the right thing. Unfortunately, he died in Season 4, which leaves a hole in ‘Mickey’s’ life that is yet to be grieved since he was incarcerated when it happened and didn’t attend the funeral. However, it now seems that ‘Mickey’ might have followed his late father a little too closely, as he too finds it difficult to maintain healthy relationships with women, given his demanding job.

Twice married and divorced, he remains close to both his exes, including ‘Maggie’ and ‘Lorna’ (Becki Newton). However, with ‘Mickey’ now sober and in a better emotional place, it’s no secret that he yearns to be back with ‘Maggie’ and his daughter, ‘Hayley’ (Krista Warner). They also represent a sense of family that is lacking in his life. Interestingly, in Michael Connelly’s book on which the show is based, ‘Mickey’s’ sibling seems to exist very differently on screen than in the books.

‘Harry Bosch,’ portrayed by Titus Welliver in the Amazon Prime Video series Bosch, is supposed to be ‘Mickey’s’ paternal half-brother. However, there are no plans for a show crossover or to confirm canon between these two on-screen characters so far. The Lincoln Lawyer appears to follow this storyline differently, since instead of going with the book, ‘Mickey’ has a sister, not a brother.

The appearance of ‘Mickey’s’ sister to unlock the most emotional plot in The Lincoln Lawyer’s history

The mysterious woman’s presence has sparked a wave of questions for ‘Mickey’, underscoring that Season 4 will be one of the most emotional chapters yet. While it could be a good thing after ‘Mickey’ lost ‘Legal’, he could also lead him to accept that ‘Maggie’ has moved on and built a new life in San Diego with ‘Jack’. On the other hand, his mother is in his life, but she often travels and is always caught up with her latest beau. He’ll certainly have questions for her about this woman who claims to be his sister, so we suspect ‘Elena’ will feature heavily in Season 5.

While it remains difficult to determine whether ‘Mickey’s’ alleged sister is younger, older, or his twin, Garcia-Rulfo is 44 years old in real life, and Smulders is 43, making it unclear how old ‘Mickey’ was when his father died in the series. However, it could be another discontinuity from the book, as he was five years old there. This means the woman would have to be no more than five years younger, though she might be around the same age. Nonetheless, the likelihood that she is much older is low, which suggests that his father might have had an affair.

Nonetheless, the possibility of her being ‘Mickey’s’ twin is not entirely out of the question, though this is a far-fetched angle the show likely won’t pursue. Which means chances are, she may have only recently discovered her parentage and the fact that her biological half-brother is a high-powered defence attorney in Los Angeles who just so happened to be recently going through a very public murder case. No matter the outcome, one thing is for sure: the upcoming storyline will definitely impact ‘Mickey’ and his thoughts about his father in more ways than we can count.
