The Mummy is reportedly rising from the dead again. As spooky as it sounds, it is truly exciting news for those who remained stuck to the screens with The Mummy franchise, which had three installments: The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. Now, reports have been rife that The Mummy is returning with its fourth installment.

The Mummy 4: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return to their respective roles

While things are kept under wraps now, the most exciting news that has come out is that the OG stars of the franchise, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, are in talks to reprise their roles in The Mummy 4. For the unversed, Brendan Fraser played ‘Rick O’Connell’ in the three installments, while Rachel Weisz appeared in the first two as ‘Evelyn Carnahan’. Rachel was not there in the third installment, and her role was played by Maria Bello. Well, if the reports are to be believed, Brendan and Rachel are now in talks to reprise their original roles in the next installment, which will reportedly be a continuation of the first two installments, ignoring the third one’s timeline.

If the reports are to be believed, Universal Pictures is developing The Mummy 4 under the direction of the filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence. The movie is reportedly in its early development, and the screenplay is reportedly being done by David Coggeshall. Well, as reports suggested that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would reprise their roles in the next film, the excitement among viewers was mainly nostalgia-driven.

The adventure-horror series The Mummy has been one of Universal Pictures’ most successful films, reportedly grossing 820 million Euros in total. While the first two installments did pretty well at the box office and even blew away the critics’ minds, the third one was comparatively less successful in terms of outcomes and got mixed reviews.

The Mummy (1999) took the 1930s story and made it an adventurous horror series. The movie was set in 1920s Egypt, and featured Brendan Fraser in the role of ‘Rick O’Connell’, an American explorer and a former soldier. He was saved from the prison by ‘Evelyn Carnahan’ (Rachel Weisz) and her brother ‘Jonathan’. ‘Rick’ helped ‘Jonathan’ and ‘Evelyn’ to find the city of Hamunaptra, and accidentally woke up ‘Imhotep’, an ancient priest who was mummified alive while trying to resurrect his love ‘Anck-Su-Namun’. Resurrecting ‘Imhotep’ brought multiple challenges, and eventually, ‘Rick’ and ‘Evelyn’ sent him to the underworld, and they fell in love.

The second installment, The Mummy Returns (2001), became one of Universal Pictures’ most successful films at the time. The movie added ‘Rick’ and ‘Evelyn’s son, ‘Alex’. While a new expedition ended up resurrecting ‘Imhotep’ again, a new villain, ‘The Scorpion King’ arrived. Eventually, after a whole lot of challenges, ‘Rick’ defeated both the villains, leading ‘Imhotep’ to lose everything and return to the underworld.

Speaking of what to expect from The Mummy 4, things are currently under wraps, so it’s not clear where the story will pick up with Brendan and Rachel’s return, but one thing is assured: it’s going to be a blast from the past, with adventure and horror.
