St. John’s best season since 1998-99 came to a crushing close Friday night in the nation’s capital with a five-point loss to overall No. 1 seed Duke.

Nevertheless, it was a memorable year that saw the Johnnies repeat as Big East regular-season and postseason champions, and reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in 27 years.

New deal

St. John’s and coach Rick Pitino’s agent, Evan Daniels, have been engaged in contract discussions for weeks. It seems likely an agreement will be reached sooner rather than later to increase Pitino’s pay and add a year to his current contract, which has three years remaining.
