5 things you didn’t know about Indira Varama

Fans are only just remembering where they have seen Indira Varma before.

BBC hit The Other Bennet Sister is back and the period drama is based on Janice Hadlow’s novel of the same name, inspired by Jane Austen’s beloved characters.

Call the Midwife star Ella Bruccoleri takes the lead as Mary Bennet, as she travels to London and the Lake District as the overlooked sister in the family.

Indira Varma has a prominent role in the series, which was filmed in Wales, as Mrs Gardiner, who kindly takes Mary under her wing and offers her life-changing opportunities.

The 52-year-old actress, whose Indian father was an illustrator and Swiss mother a graphic designer, was raised in Bath and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1995.

Her first ever role was in the erotic romance film Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love in 1996 and her first TV appearance came in the same year, when she starred in Crucial Tales. She is best known for playing Ellaria Sand in the hit series, Game of Thrones.

Away from film and TV, the actress is also known for her extensive list of theatre credits, which is how she came to meet her husband.

She met actor Colin Tierney in 1997 while they were performing together in Othello at the National Theatre.

In a 2023 article with The Guardian, the actress said she would “love to do something fun” with her husband in terms of another collaborative project.

The couple live in north London with their teenage daughter Evelyn, who was born in 2007.

In an interview with The Times in 2014, the star revealed the couple’s London home was burgled when she was heavily pregnant with Evelyn.

She recalled: “It was horrendous — we love to travel, and they took our computer full of photographs, and did a poo in the toilet. We wondered if we should keep it for evidence.”

Telling another tale of their home life, she shared: “Once, when Colin was away, there were loud bangs in the night. I thought it was a ghost, or that we were being broken into.

“It turned out that a mouse had gnawed through a wire under the floorboards, and it was sparking.”

Tierney, 58, from Liverpool, played Calvin in EastEnders back in 2018 and he narrated the series Aircrash Confidential. He has also had guest roles in Endeavour, Doctors, Until I Kill You and Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.

The Other Bennet sister airs on BBC One on Sundays, the series is also available on BBC iPlayer
