The Repair Shop star Dominic Chinea juggles his work on the show with running his own workshop, where he restores classic cars, admitting he has recently had a ‘manic time’ between the two

The Repair Shop star Dominic Chinea admits he was “feeling terrible” as he opened up about a “manic” time on the show. The metal worker has been a popular figure on the hit BBC show since joining as an expert in 2017.

Since then he has gone on to present the show alongside co-star Will Kirk. Last year Dominic, along with wife Maria and their beloved dog Wendy swapped their life in Kent for Cornwall.

Dominic described the decision to buy the farmhouse and barn as “lifechanging”. Since then he has got to work converting the former barn into a workshop, where he restores old cars.

Among the vehicles in Dominic’s workshop have been a Land Rover Series 1 and a Land Rover Defender 110. In a recent video on his Dominic Chinea YouTube channel, he revealed work had stalled due to his “manic” filming schedule and illness.

He said: “Two things we are ignoring, number one, I am really ill, I’ve got a horrible cold and I’m feeling extremely run down. It’s been a busy couple of weeks with the NEC in the middle and I spent two weeks filming Repair Shop. It has been manic and I am exhausted and feeling terrible.

“We’re also going to walk past the 110 that’s up on the lift, that’s broken, the steering box is leaking, I have got the new one, the replacement, [but] we’re ignoring that.”

Earlier this year Dominic opened up about the difficulties he’s had attempting to weatherproof his workshop. And his fears came true in January after it was battered by heavy storms.

In a YouTube video, he said: “The storm has caused a lot of damage, the workshop roof, various tiles and bits and bobs. I’m doing my best to deal with those, I’ve ordered more roof sheets and I’ve lined up roofers to try and fix the roof, but I’m also juggling trying to finish this kitchen.”

In his video Dominic also hit-out at the sound of chainsaws echoing around Cornwall. He said: “I think every tree surgeon in Cornwall is up to their eyeballs busy at the moment. It’s kind of heart-breaking, there’s not enough trees here as it is.”

Dominic has previously spoken about how stressful he found moving his family from Kent to Cornwall. He said: “It is completely life-changing. It really is. I’m never moving again. It was stressful, but it’s like having that workshop and having that at home has been a dream for so long. And I’m very, very fortunate, very grateful that I’ve actually been able to do it, but it doesn’t come easy.”

He added: “It has been a lot of work, a huge amount of work, and as I say, it is still very much derelict. I’m still shovelling cow poo out where all my tools are. So, you know, it’s been a long road, and it will continue to be a long road, but it has been a life-changing decision. Moving to the other side of the country, it’s like, you know, seven hours away from anyone. But it’s good, it’s nice.”

Dominic returns to screens with the Repair Shop from 8pm tonight (April 1) on BBC Two. This week experts will restore a lamp that was left to visitor John by his friend Brian who died during the Aids epidemic.

He fondly reminisces as the lamp would decorate Brian’s flat during lavish cocktail parties. Elsewhere, Chris from Surrey brings in a pair of his father’s old shoes that he wore to train with Roger Bannister when he broke the four-minute mile.
