Alexis Mac Allister found a way past Thibaut Courtois as Liverpool beat Real Madrid

Andy Robertson and several of his Liverpool team-mates could be forgiven for feeling a sense of deja vu as they watched Thibaut Courtois pull off a string of brilliant saves at Anfield last night.

Courtois produced a superb display as Real Madrid won the Champions League final in Paris in 2022, denying Jurgen Klopp’s Reds before Vinicius Jr struck the only goal of the game 14 minutes into the second half.

It looked like the giant Belgian would break Liverpool hearts again last night with commanding blocks to keep out a Dominik Szoboszlai shot and a Virgil van Dijk header as the home side pressed for the opening goal.

He was eventually beaten by Alexis Mac Allister’s header from a Szoboszlai free-kick as Liverpool edged an absorbing encounter 1-0.

Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com: “Really pleasing. Glad we built on Saturday, trying to bring that consistency back.

“I thought from minute one we were all bang there tonight and just carried on from Saturday in terms of being hard to beat, working hard for each other, always trying to help your mate out. Then I thought the quality was there as well.

“I thought their ’keeper [Thibaut Courtois] was outstanding, he obviously managed to keep the score down. We had a few big chances, especially at the start of the second half. But 1-0, a pleasing night, a massive three points for us and now we move on.”

He’s an unbelievable keeper – Robertson hails Courtois

He added on Courtois: “You just have to keep going. Probably the lads who played in the final in Paris [in 2022] had a bit of déjà vu! He’s an unbelievable ’keeper, exceptional, and he always seems to bring out his best against us.

“He’s really hard to beat but thankfully we just kept knocking at the door and we believed that if we kept creating the chances we would hopefully knock it down eventually, and thankfully Macca popped up and got the goal.

“Then we could probably have scored more, the game really opened up. We were then defending and playing on the counter-attack, which probably suited us in the last 10 to 15 minutes and just if that last pass was right we could have been in one-on-one.

“But everyone worked their socks off today, even the lads coming off the bench really played their part as well, and [it was] a massive all-round performance today.”

Reds want consistency ahead of City trip

It was a second successive win for Liverpool following on from Saturday’s defeat of Aston Villa and Robertson hopes they can now show some improved form following a difficult run.

The Scotland international added: “It’s important now that we have to be consistent: that was the message today before the game, we need the consistency back in the game, and I think we really brought that.

“But we’ve got another massive game on Sunday [at Manchester City] and it’s going to be tough. We’ve put a lot into this week already and it’s going to be difficult, but we obviously go there with more confidence than we had last week so that’s pleasing.”
