This is the sixth outlet in the series of Moore Market bookstores, and though they diverge from each other thematically, whether it is Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes or Poe, the central tenet remains the same: the soul of the original Moore Market. Established in the ’90s during the colonial period, the historic Moore Market formed a major part of the coming-of-age of Chennai’s literature lovers. It was also a quintessential part of Shah’s childhood, who visited the market every weekend. When it mysteriously burned down in 1985, Moore Market took with it a core part of the city’s literary culture. 40 years later, this haunting tragedy inspired Shah to base his own bookstore around the nostalgia and remembrance of that history. “The whole concept of Moore Market, the soul of Moore Market, is the same. We sell pre-owned books, collectibles and vintage items, just like the market originally did,” he says.
