Violent protests erupted across Bangladesh on Thursday night after youth leader Osman Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore, where he was being treated for gunshot injuries from a shooting in Dhaka last week.
Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has strongly condemned the alleged lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, which took place amid unrest following the death of youth leader Osman Hadi. In a statement, the government said it was deeply shocked by the killing and made it clear that such violence will not be tolerated. “There is no place for this kind of brutality in the new Bangladesh. Those responsible for this crime will not be spared,” the administration said.
Yunus’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, shared the statement in Bangla on Facebook. The government said it strongly and clearly condemns all forms of violence, threats, arson, and destruction of lives and property.
Calling Hadi a martyr, the government appealed to people across the country to reject hatred, provocation, and violence. It also expressed solidarity with journalists from leading newspapers, including The Daily Star, Prothom Alo and New Age, whose offices were attacked and set on fire by mobs.
“We stand with you,” the statement said. “We are deeply sorry for the fear and violence you had to face. Despite the terror, the nation has seen your courage. An attack on journalists is an attack on the truth. We assure you that justice will be done.”
Yunus assures quick action
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation on television late Thursday night and confirmed the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. He promised fast action to catch those responsible for the killing.
Speaking in the address, Yunus said the country had received very sad news. He described Hadi as a brave leader of the July uprising and a key voice of Inqilab Mancha, according to Press Trust of India.
Yunus said the killers would not be spared and assured that everyone involved in the crime would be brought to justice quickly. He also appealed to people across the country to remain calm and show restraint. Yunus urged citizens to allow the police and other agencies to do their work properly and carry out the investigation in a professional manner.
He added that the state is fully committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice.
