Newtown’s south end has long lagged behind the action up north, but there’s been an exciting new development: South End, a seasonally-driven bistro from seasoned pros, Hussein Sarhan, former head chef of Fred’s, Alex Tong, ex-sous chef at Ester, and front-of-house veteran Paul Guiney. The Euro-leaning menu includes dishes like venison crudo on hot garlic toasts, potato rosti with Goldstreet Dairy curds and eggplant caviar with soft herbs. Paired with standout wines from small producers and freezer-chilled cocktails, the south end is where it’s at.
