With a thumbs up to Australia’s team physio, Usman Khawaja proved he was fit to fight for his spot in the team ahead of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Khawaja was put through his paces by physio Nick Jones at the team’s optional training session on Monday afternoon, doing a series of shuttle runs, sidesteps and squats across about 25 minutes of fitness and agility testing after the back spasms that wrecked his Perth Test.

At one point Khawaja gave Jones a thumbs up, before finishing the series of drills and collecting his gear to go to the nets.

Once there he undertook a first batting session since Perth, taking throwdowns from assistant coach Michael Di Venuto.

Earlier in the nets, Pat Cummins bowled with impressive rhythm as he continued his comeback from a back problem, and turned Marnus Labuschagne inside out with one delivery of high pace and late away movement.
