A viral tweet has come back into focus about the connections Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet had to Hollywood before his astronomical rise to the forefront of the film world
Timothée Chalamet has become embroiled in a nepo baby backlash after fans uncovered the identity of a very famous relative. The 30-year-old actor – famous for playing Paul Atreides in the Dune film series and for his romantic involvement with reality show star Kylie Jenner – got his big break in 2009 with a role on the iconic TV show Law & Order.
However, fans have suggested the star may have had a leg up for his acting career thanks to family members being deeply involved in the Hollywood industry. This year, Timothée is a frontrunner for Oscar’s glory thanks to his role as Marty Mauser in the critically acclaimed big-screen drama, Marty Supreme.
The 2026 Best Actor nominee has become a target, however, with some fans turning on him in recent days after digging into his family connections. And one bitter fan has branded the actor a “nepo baby” and suggested that family connections opened doors for him.

A post shared via X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2023, has suddenly gone viral once again in the midst of award season. The film fan wrote: “Hollywood is giving him special treatment. Chalamet is a nepo baby, but a lot of people don’t know that. He has an uncle in the industry who opened a lot of doors for him.”
The family member in question is Rodman Flender, who is an actor and director who has been involved in major projects including The Office, Ugly Betty, and the film Leprechaun 2. Rodman is also described as being a best friend of influential American talk show host Conan O’Brien.
While Timothée’s mother, Nicole Flender, has also been highlighted for having links to the entertainment world, having performed on Broadway. However, the star has been defended by some fans.
One wrote, siding with the Oscar nominee: “Timothee Chalamet is all kinds of privileged, but being a nepo baby isn’t smth I would ascribe to him.” Another argued: “He struggled for years in the beginning, like all other actors. His breakthrough came with a brilliant performance in [Call Me By Your Name].”
And a further fan typed: “He’s privileged for sure. But contacts only get you your first auditions. And his connections aren’t that powerful people, his filmography and fanbase have had a lot more impact for years. Nepotism gets you a first shot in Hollywood, not a career.”
Timothée wowed film critics last year with his performance in Marty Supreme. He played a talented ping pong player, with the character based on real American table tennis player Marty Reisman.
The actor performed alongside Oscar-winning Gwyneth Paltrow, who made her long-awaited return to the big screen after a six-year absence. The star played an actress returning to the stage after a long absence from the spotlight.
Film fans were shocked by the sex scenes between the 53-year-old actress and the younger star, who is 23 years her junior. Last year, the Shakespeare In Love star revealed she was uncomfortable with an intimacy coordinator being on hand to guide her and Timmy through the sex scenes they filmed together.
She told Vanity Fair: “I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot – a lot.” She went on to explain her surprise at the way the film industry had changed since the last time she was asked to enact intimate scenes in front of a camera.
She said: “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed… Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.”
And she revealed she opted to reject the inclusion of the intimacy coordinator. She explained: “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’…. I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but…if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here’ … I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.”
