PORT ST. LUCIE — Tobias Myers has succeeded as both a starter and reliever, enhancing his value to the Mets.
As he enters spring training for his new team, the right-hander said he’s been told by team officials to build up as a starter, providing additional depth as needed to a group that includes Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, David Peterson and Kodai Senga.
“I’m coming into it generally as a starter, and kinda be ready for anything,” Myers told The Post. “Whatever happens as far as health-wise for everybody in camp … iIt’s definitely a lot easier to go ahead and start stretched out and tone it back from there if I need to go in the bullpen, rather than trying to build up innings during the season.”
Myers, who arrived with Peralta in the trade that sent Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams to Milwaukee, appeared in 22 games for the Brewers last season, six as a starter. In those six starts, he pitched to a 5.64 ERA before he was optioned to Triple-A. He returned as a reliever and pitched to a 1.91 ERA in his 16 appearances.
