Emiliano Buendia curled in the winner from outside the box as Aston Villa earned a fifth consecutive win in all competitions with a comeback victory at Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.
Midfielder Buendia completed a slick move by finding the far corner of the net with a low strike 13 minutes from time as Spurs’ winless home league run extended to three matches since their win over Burnley on August 16.

The result lifted Villa, who equalised eight minutes before half-time through a spectacular Morgan Rogers strike and are next in action away to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League on Thursday, to 10th.

Tottenham, who travel to Ligue 1 club Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday, took a fifth-minute lead through Rodrigo Bentancur’s half-volley but are now sixth.
England midfielder Rogers, whose improving performances had been praised by Villa boss Unai Emery in the build-up to his side’s attempt to win a fifth successive match in all competitions – arrowed a thunderous finish past Guglielmo Vicario to level in the 37th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa: Villans’ resurgence goes on
Villa had convincingly shown their powers of recovery by reacting to a slow start to the season with Wwns over Burnley, Feyenoord, Fulham and Bologna, and Tottenham’s early opener proved another chance to triumph from adversity.
Mohammed Kudus sent an inviting cross to the far post, where Joao Palhinha rose to nod the ball down for Rodrigo Bentancur to score with a half-volley in front of goal.
Kudus then found the back of the net from Mathys Tel’s pass, but the goal was ruled out because of an offside run by the winger that Spurs were left to rue when Rogers equalised in sublime style, arrowing in from distance for his first goal of 2025/26.
Buendia’s blockbuster goal was his third in his last four games for Villa – matching his total across his previous 44 games in all competitions – and ensured Spurs manager Thomas Frank’s failure to beat a team managed by Unai Emery extended to six matches, representing the Dane’s worst record against an opposition boss.
Tottenham’s new boss might have feared his luck was out when Cristian Romero was injured in the warm-up, Kevin Danso stepping in and Micky van de Ven taking the armband.
Tel also had to be replaced during the second half and appeared to be applying treatment to a swollen knee on the bench.

Tottenham vs Villa teams
Kevin Danso replaced Cristian Romero for Tottenham after the captain suffered an injury in the warm-up, with Micky van de Ven taking the armband.
On-loan Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani returned on the bench following a dead leg, but striker Dominic Solanke (ankle) was out, as was midfielder Yves Bissouma, who was injured on international duty with Mali.
Defenders Radu Dragusin and Kota Takai and midfielders James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were also sidelined.
Spurs started the game unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions and ended a run of two league draws with a 2-1 win at Leeds United on October 4.

Villa lineup vs Tottenham
Ollie Watkins returned on the bench for Villa, having missed England’s 5-0 win in Latvia on Tuesday with an injury the striker sustained during the Three Lions’ home victory over Wales five days earlier.
Centre-back Tyrone Mings had been a doubt and missed a third consecutive game.
Manager Unai Emery had said England international Rogers’ form is “getting better”. “He started [the season] a little bit like the team – not performing very well, not confident.
“In the last matches he played, maybe he’s not scoring, but he’s playing better. He’s feeling better [and] confident.
“Playing with the national team, [with] how they were performing collectively and individually… [he is taking] responsibility and being a protagonist, like he [has been in the past] in [our] starting 11.”
The Villans had won their last four games across the top flight and the Europa League, beating Burnley 2-1 at home two weeks ago
