Xavi Simons’ difficult start to his Tottenham career continued as he was dismissed in the 33rd minute of their clash with Liverpool.
Tottenham suffered a huge setback in their clash with Liverpool as Xavi Simons was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Virgil van Dijk following a VAR review.
There had been little incident for much of the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with both sides reluctant to show too much ambition in attack.
Yet Liverpool’s cause was boosted in the 33rd minute, when Simons was dismissed for a bizarre loss of composure in his tackle on Netherlands team-mate Van Dijk.
Simons had initially been shown a yellow card for catching Van Djik on the back of the ankle and getting none of the ball.
Yet referee John Brooks was sent to the pitchside monitor for an on-field review at the recommendation of the VAR, and after viewing replays that showed raised studs from Simons, promptly changed his decision.
Simons’ dismissal marked another lowpoint in a disappointing start to his Tottenham career, and Liverpool went close to capitalising immediately, with Florian Wirtz denied by a fine save from Guglielmo Vicario.
