Hyderabad: Transport services were partially disrupted in the city on Thursday during the ‘Bharat bandh’ called by 10 national trade unions to protest against the Centre’s new labour laws. Besides, truckers participated in the bandh, affecting cargo movement.
Participation in the strike auto-rickshaw and cab drivers and mini-bus operators affected commuting in several areas. Some school students were unable to attend classes as a section of private transport operators stayed off the roads.
A parent said, “School bus operators informed us that they are taking part in the protest. I tried to arrange an alternative transport for my two daughters but I could not find any autorickshaw from Sitaphalmandi to Secunderabad, which forced my children to stay back home.”
Truckers and other transport operators took out a rally from RTC Kalyana Mandapam to Indira Park as part of the protest.
A representative of the Telangana Lorry Owners Association president said, “Lakhs of families which are dependent on the transport sector are pushed into hardship because of the Central government’s policies which are against labour and working class. This protest is to demonstrate to the government that we oppose the laws that they are bringing in.”
