The House of Representatives has voted against the US president’s use of “emergency” powers in the trade war with Canada

President Donald Trump has warned Republican lawmakers they will face political “consequences” after the House of Representatives voted to roll back some of his tariffs on Canada.

In a pair of posts on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump accused Canada of taking advantage of the United States and defended tariffs as a key pillar of his economic and national security strategy.

“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” Trump wrote.

The House voted 219–211 to pass a resolution aimed at ending economywide tariffs imposed on Canada under an “emergency” declaration supposedly related to fentanyl trafficking at the northern border. Six Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure, which challenges Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
