US VP, JD Vance's Statement On Wife's Faith Being Questioned By Hindu American Foundation

The vice president of the US, JD Vance, is currently making headlines for a controversial remark on his wife, Usha Vance’s faith. For the unversed, JD is a Christian, whereas Usha is a Hindu. After receiving extreme backlash on social media, JD took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to defend what he said. However, the US VP’s motive to come out clean on his wife’s religion didn’t go well with the organisation, the Hindu American Foundation. In fact, the executive director, Suhag Shukla, has also reacted to it.

What was US VP, JD Vance’s controversial remark?

Earlier this week, during a Q&A session at the ‘Turning Point USA’ event in Mississippi, US VP, JD Vance, was asked whether he wished his Hindu wife, Usha, to turn Christian one day. Upon hearing the question, JD expressed hope that one day his wife, Usha, would be moved by the sentiments of a church. He also mentioned that they go to church most Sundays. He later shared that if Usha doesn’t convert to Christianity, he has no problem as God said that everybody as a free will. He was quoted as saying:

“As I’ve told her and I’ve said publicly, and I’ll say now in front to 10,000 of my closest friends: Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, I honestly do with that. Because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way. But if she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me.”

JD Vance tries to defend his statement during the TPUSA event

On October 31, 2025, JD Vance took to his X handle and shared a lengthy note defending himself on what he said during the ‘Turning Point USA’ event in Mississippi. Highlighting three points, JD tried to explain what he meant. He mentioned that, as a public figure, people are curious about him and his interfaith marriage, so he had to answer the question.

For the uninitiated, the couple tied the knot in 2014, in Kentucky. In the second point, JD clearly mentioned that his wife, who is not a Christian, has no plans to convert. And in the last point, he shared that Christians, too, have some sentiments that have no reason. An excerpt from his note can be read as:

“My Christian faith tells me the Gospel is true and is good for human beings. My wife–as I said at the TPUSA–is the most amazing blessing I have in my life. She herself encouraged me to re-engage with my faith many years ago. She is not a Christian and has no plans to convert, but like many people in an interfaith marriage. I hope she may one day see things as I do. Regardless, I’ll continue to love and support her and talk to her about faith and life and everything else, because she’s my wife.”

Hindu American Foundation and its executive producer, Suhag Shukla, question his tweet on coming out clean on his wife’s faith

Soon after US VP, JD Vance took to his X handle and shared the lengthy note in order to defend himself on what he said about his wife’s faith, especially that people thought to be thrown under the bus, Hindu American Foundation re tweeted and questioned why JD didn’t reciprocate to Hinduism as his Hindu wife was the one who re-engaged him with his faith. Executive, Suhag Shukla has also reacted to the following. Sharing the tweet of Hindu American Foundation, she wrote :

“You’ve said, movingly, @JDVance, that Usha is your greatest blessing. Why wouldn’t you then appreciate the spiritual heritage that helped lead her to be that blessing in your life? As Hindus, we believe that there are many ways to know the Truth — that One Divine Essence that underlies everything. As Hindus, we’re not moved to convert you. We’re moved to honour and respect you and all of existence as not different from our own Self.”
