NIZAMABAD: Irrigation and civil supplies minister and Nizamabad parliamentary constituency municipal elections in-charge N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday asserted that the Congress was set to reclaim the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, expressing confidence of securing a clear majority and the mayor’s post.
“Surveys clearly show the people want change. Congress will win 40 out of 60 divisions in the civic body and secure the mayor’s post. This is the moment to go all out, reach every voter, and bring Nizamabad back into the Congress fold,” he said.
Addressing party workers and contestants, Uttam Kumar Reddy described the civic polls in Nizamabad, the third largest city in Telangana, as a crucial and prestigious election for the party. He said the election was equally significant for voters expecting the municipal corporation to benefit from the state government’s urban infrastructure push. “Strengthen our hands, and I assure you that the city will be positioned at the next level in development,” he said.
Referring to recent electoral outcomes, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the BJP had won the Nizamabad Urban Assembly seat in the 2023 elections, while Congress improved its vote share. He noted that the BJP retained the Lok Sabha seat in the 2025 parliamentary polls, though Congress had gained momentum. In earlier municipal elections, the mayor’s post was held by the BRS, with the BJP and AIMIM establishing pockets of influence, leaving Congress on the margins.
He said the current situation was different and claimed that voter sentiment had shifted in favour of the Congress. The minister called on party cadres to mobilise support among backward classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minority communities. He urged them to highlight what he described as the BJP’s failure to expand civic infrastructure in the city and the BRS’s decline, while projecting Congress as an alternative focused on development and inclusion.
