Micky van de Ven has described Tottenham’s current situation as a “doomsday scenario”, admitting the team feels as though it is absorbing “blow after blow” during a difficult run of results.
Spurs were beaten 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday, a result that marked their fourth straight defeat under interim manager Igor Tudor. The visitors endured a disastrous start in Madrid, falling 4-0 behind within the opening 22 minutes.
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was substituted after just 17 minutes following three early concessions in a chaotic opening spell.
The defeat extended Tottenham’s losing run to six matches in all competitions, while they have now gone nine games without a victory.
Reflecting on the match, Van de Ven said the opening stages were among the most difficult moments the squad has experienced this season.
“It’s actually a doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” he told Ziggo Sport.
“For our goalkeeper it’s terrible as well of course. You don’t wish that on anyone. For 15 minutes we just conceded goals that you really can’t do anything about.”
Tottenham taking blow after blow
Tudor took charge in February following the dismissal of Thomas Frank, but Tottenham have struggled to reverse their form since the change in management.
The club currently sit 16th in the Premier League and remain just one point above the relegation zone, with avoiding a first top-flight relegation since 1977 now their primary objective for the remainder of the campaign.
Tottenham return to domestic action this weekend with a difficult trip to defending champions Liverpool. They will then host relegation rivals Nottingham Forest after the second leg of their tie against Atletico Madrid.
Van de Ven admitted the current run has taken a heavy toll on the squad.
“Right now we’re just taking blow after blow after blow,” he said.
“It’s just really tough, and now we also have an important match this weekend that I won’t be able to play in because I’m suspended.
“It’s a really terrible period, I can tell you that. It’s really, really awful.”
The defender will miss the trip to Liverpool after being sent off during last week’s 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.
Van de Ven also revealed he has stepped away from social media during the difficult period.
“I’m not on my phone anymore. I’m completely done with it. Just my family, so it’ll be fine,” he said.
“It’s rough, really rough. I have to keep going. It’s part of it, that’s life and we’ll see what’s coming.”
