BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay exposed his colleague’s remark with listeners after recounting what he described as his “nightmare” scenario

Vernon Kay playfully called out one of his BBC Radio 2 colleagues live on air this week, after she tried to make a private comment. Following what he described as “a heavy” weekend, the 51-year-old confessed he’d applied some fake tan – but made a slight blunder in the process.

“I’ve had a fake tan nightmare, I’m not embarrassed to say it, I put on a little bit of splash last night to elevate my [look],” he told listeners.

“After a heavy weekend I thought I need a bit of colour, you know what I mean? And then I’ve woke up with a fake tan stain on the palm of my hand.”

Reacting to his colleague Janine, who seemed to make a remark in the studio, he said: “It does look like a bit of poo, you’re right Janine.”

When his producer Phil responded with a sound of disgust, Vernon went on to say: “You know what I mean, that’s disgusting.”

He then joked: “Why would you bring that into the studio? You know whatever you say, I’m going to repeat it. It works that way Janine, it’s been three years!”.

His show producer interjected, telling her: “We can still hear you when you whisper,” prompting Vernon to add: “Yeah, you’re talking to the nation, your microphone is live.

“But, you’re right, it does look like something else, I won’t repeat, you should know better Janine, whatever comes out of your mouth, or whatever you even whisper, I’m going to say it, you should’ve learned by now.”

Reflecting on his fake tan blunder, Vernon went on he was clueless about removing the marks, joking: “We’re having a wonky Tuesday.”

The broadcaster’s tanning revelation follows his recent comments about potential replacements for his wife Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman on Strictly Come Dancing.

The presenting pair confirmed their exit during last year’s series, bringing an end to their 11-year partnership on the main show.

Since the announcement, speculation has been rife with various high-profile figures mentioned – including Zoe Ball and past contestant La Voix.

Speaking about his preferred successor, the Do You Know Your Place? host told The Metro: “Alex Jones should be on the floor.

“She is probably the funniest presenter I’ve worked with. With the formalities of The One Show, I don’t think she gives the audience the opportunity to see her funny and irreverent side. She’d be perfect because she is one of the best in a live TV scenario. Absolutely brilliant.”

He continued: “If they pick anyone but Alex, that person has to, literally, be made of liquid gold. Alex, for me, is the right choice.

“She’s done so many years on The One Show [and] deserves a shot at a big prime-time entertainment show. I don’t mean anything derogatory about The One Show – it’s great – but it is Alex’s time.”

Offering his perspective on potential successors for Claudia’s position in the Claudatorium, Vernon suggested: “Then upstairs, someone who knows the show better than most… Rylan [Clark].”

Do You Know Your Place? continues today at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
