BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay suffered a painful injury to his back and spine after jumping down two steps at the BBC canteen before his show, admitting he ‘can’t do it anymore’

BBC Radio 2 host Vernon Kay has confessed he “can’t do it anymore” after sustaining a painful injury at the corporation’s studios just before going live on air. The 51 year old broadcaster was sympathising with a listener who had been recovering at home following a tumble from a stepladder in their kitchen.

Whilst offering his support to the listener, Vernon disclosed he’d experienced his own mishap after attempting something that would have been “easily” achievable during his childhood years. The presenter explained how he leapt down two steps at the BBC canteen, resulting in agonising injuries to his back and spine.

During his BBC Radio 2 programme, Vernon acknowledged the incident had served as a wake-up call that he’s now “of an age” where he must exercise greater caution before attempting such manoeuvres. The revelation comes as Vernon recently declared “I’d give her a run for her money” whilst making a career plea.

The Bolton native remarked: “You’ve got to be careful when you’re doing stuff like that. When you do things like that it makes you realise you’re off an age. I did that giddy thing today, and this relates to the story we’re going to do on your voice notes later.”

He elaborated: “As you step down into the BBC canteen, there’s just two steps. There’s two steps. Now if you take yourself back to when you were 11, at high school, you would jump those two steps. You’d see the two steps and go ‘wahey, I’m not going to step down the two steps, I’m going to jump down the two steps.’

“Well I unfortunately did that this morning. In the canteen I saw two steps and thought ‘I’ll jump down them, easy.’ Like a kid. Well my knees don’t have the suspension they used to have when I was 11,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

“They were like two fence posts and I felt it right in the hips. It went right up to the top of my spine. You just can’t do it anymore. You just can’t do it anymore.”

In other news, Vernon has recently spoken candidly about a frightening incident that occurred whilst on a family break. Looking back on his holidays over the years, the radio host reminisced about the numerous getaways he’s enjoyed throughout his life, although not every memory has been picture-perfect.

Discussing holidays from his younger days, the BBC presenter revealed that many involved short breaks to destinations like Blackpool, alongside visits to Torquay and Newquay. “And we loved a jaunt to Jersey. Then, when the package holiday came along, we ventured abroad on Monarch Airlines,” he told The Times.

“My uncle Graham, his brother Robert, his daughter, my auntie Christine, my cousin Lee, me, Dad, Mum and my younger brother Steven all stayed in a villa in Praia da Luz on the Algarve. We walked around looking like ice creams because we had that much sun cream on.”

Describing one especially harrowing moment that remains etched in his memory, he continued: “One time I saved my brother from drowning. He dived in the pool and started panicking, so he owes me one there.

“It was my mum’s 40th birthday and I remember having peri peri chicken for the first time and Mum having her first ever cigarette. She smoked two drags and coughed for the rest of the night,” Vernon recalled.
