The BBC Radio 2 presenter caused a stir by unveiling a new grey hairstyle on The One Show, with him embracing his natural colour and vowing not to return to dyeing it
Vernon Kay insists “I’m not going back” after sparking a reaction during his stint on The One Show. The 51-year-old appeared to have ditched the dye as he unveiled a fresh look whilst appearing alongside Welsh presenter Alex Jones on Wednesday.
Audiences watching witnessed Vernon sporting a shorter cut than usual alongside a considerably lighter shade than fans have come to expect. It seems the father-of-two has chosen to embrace his naturally greying hair, confessing it was a “pain in the bum” to keep up his previous colour.
Vernon’s revamped appearance had people talking on Thursday following his One Show slot. He revealed to BBC Radio 2 colleague Scott Mills that a fellow passenger urged him to listen to the breakfast programme after his hairstyle generated buzz.
Father-of-two Vernon explained: “There’s a lovely lady who I get the train with every morning and she said, ‘Have you heard the radio this morning?’ I said, ‘No, what are they doing?’ She said, ‘Oh they’re talking about your haircut’.”
Scott found himself having to inform Vernon that his new look had prompted comparisons to another celebrity. He remarked: “A couple of people…maybe more…” Vernon cut in: “Brian Cox? A great actor but not sure I would go into the hairdresser with a picture of Big Brian.”
Scott, however, clarified that people actually meant Vernon resembled former D:Ream frontman Professor Brian Cox.
Complimenting his Radio 2 colleague, he continued: “I see what they mean, but also, you looked magnificent on The One Show last night.”
Vernon revealed he had been taking “tanning drops” before Scott steered the discussion back to his fresh hairstyle, quipping: “Someone’s been on the Timotei.”
Vernon replied: “Someone said stop dying your hair. I haven’t done grey blending for many, many years. I’m not going back though because it’s just a pain in the bum. I’m just going to leave it, let it do its thing.”
Scott praised Vernon, noting his hair appeared “so bouncy” on the prime time BBC programme. He continued: “With that white top and those tanning drops, it just set it all off. You’ve never looked better in my opinion.”
Vernon playfully joked he would “see Scott in the bike sheds” following the broadcast. Last week Vernon unveiled his new look on Instagram, writing: “New lid.”
The post triggered a wave of admiration from his followers, with weatherman Owain Wyn Evans remarking: “Looking good darling.”
Fellow television presenter Joel Dommett responded: “Love it.”
While Radio 2’s Trevor Nelson wrote: “At last” followed by the clapping hands emoji. Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing’s Carlos Gu described the appearance as “chic”.
In other news, Vernon humorously claimed this week that he had been “banned” from discussing the Super Bowl on his show following the historic victory of British coach Aden Durde. The presenter’s light-hearted remark came as he celebrated Durde’s achievement, which has received widespread praise within the UK sports community.
The coach made history on Sunday night, becoming the first foreign coach to secure a Super Bowl win. The defensive coordinator, originally from Middlesex, played a crucial role in guiding the Seattle Seahawks to an impressive 29–13 victory over the New England Patriots.
Vernon expressed: “I’m feeling on top of the world – no, seriously, I really do feel on top of the world. I think anyone who’s had any interaction with Aden will be proud as punch that he has won the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s just an amazing sporting achievement.”
He continued: “I watched the game last night with some of my fellow teammates at the London Warriors, who’ve all been coached by Aden at some stage in their lives. It’s just amazing – it really is.
“Now, I’ve been banned. I’ve had my three links talking about American football, and Phil’s got the gaffa tape ready. If I mention it again, he’s going to put it over my mouth. Then we’re going to hand over to Janice Janine, who will be the host for the rest of this morning.”
