Flood warnings as cyclone Narelle leaves parting gift to Exmouth, Carnarvon
WA Premier Roger Cook will fly to Exmouth today to meet with locals and leaders and assess the damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which crossed the coast as a category 3 system on Friday.
The system dumped more than 350 millimetres of rain across areas like Exmouth and Carnarvon.
With flooding now impacting the region, authorities are reminding drivers to avoid floodwaters after a couple became stranded in their vehicle yesterday and had to be rescued by helicopter.
Those with property damaged by the cyclone are now eligible to claim up to $4000 in emergency relief funding as Exmouth remains cut-off from the rest of the state for a fourth day.
Across the country and around the world
Here’s what’s making headlines across the country and around the world:
- Fugitive Dezi Freeman has been shot dead by armed police on Monday morning at a rural property near the Victoria-NSW border after more than six months on the run.
- Households have been warned that their weekly grocery bill could soon soar if the federal government fails to slice trucking industry taxes, as Anthony Albanese and state premiers prepare to map out ways to stop runaway demand for petrol and diesel.
- We see so much news about the war in the Middle East that it is easy to overlook what is not being described in the daily coverage of Iran. And that makes Shiva Mahbobi angry, because she is worried about the cruelty of the Iranian leaders – and what they might do next in their desperation to retain power, writes David Crowe.
