She was well-connected in elite social circles, particularly through her father, and was widely reported to have introduced Jeffrey Epstein to many influential and wealthy individuals, including Prince Andrew, Donald Trump, and Bill Clinton. Her relationship with Jeffrey made the lines between their personal and professional lives blur, and she eventually became a partner in crime in his s*x offences. In December 2021, she was found guilty of five counts, including sex trafficking of a minor, and in June 2022, she was sentenced to twenty years in prison.

Ghislaine Maxwell met Jeffrey Epstein in the early 1990s in New York, shortly after the death of her father, British media mogul, Robert Maxwell, and after her engagement was called off. Her ex-fiancé was reported to be Count Gianfranco Cicogna. Accounts differ on the exact circumstances and timing of Ghislaine and Jeffrey’s initial meeting. Still, it is generally reported that they were introduced by a mutual friend or through her father’s social circles. During an interview with the Department of Justice in July 2025, Ghislaine mentioned she met Jeffrey ‘at his offices on Madison Garden’, who at the time was ‘looking for a wife.’ Regarding their first meeting, she said:

“I met him at his offices on Madison Garden. And I think the most memorable thing I can think about is that he was wearing a tie, which he didn’t often do.”

Ghislaine, at that time, was seeking a fresh start in New York following the scandal and financial ruin that followed her father’s mysterious death in 1991, which made her vulnerable. Epstein was a successful financier who offered her support. If reports are to be believed, Epstein transferred more than USD 30 million to Ghislaine Maxwell’s accounts between 1999 and 2007; however, the purpose of those transactions is unclear. It happened after their romantic relationship waned in the late 1990s. During that time, Ghislaine remained a close associate and employee of Jeffrey, managing his properties and staff across his various homes.

While they often shared a bed, she claimed they rarely had int*rcourse, with Jeffrey preferring other forms of s*xual activities. Ghislaine shared such personal details regarding her and Jeffrey’s relationship during a conversation with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in Florida in July 2025. Regarding her hope of building a deep connection with Jeffrey, Ghislaine said:

“Slept with him one time and thought, ‘we’re going to be dating. That’s the world I came from.”
