Indian fans were delighted by the bond between openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma despite rain-hit T20I opener in Canberra.
New Delhi: The opening T20I between India and Australia in Canberra may have been abandoned due to rain, but it still brought a few heartwarming moments particularly when Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma were seen sharing a fun banter on the sidelines. The two Punjab teammates, who have known each other since childhood, are now India’s opening pair in T20Is. Watching them in national colours, joking and chatting during the rain delay, beautifully captured the essence of their long journey together.

Commentators are even saying -“Indono ka alag hi chal raha hai “and laughs😂 pic.twitter.com/wCem14HS0b— SA♡❀ (@criclove77) October 29, 2025
Before rain interrupted the play, India got off to an impressive start with the bat first. Abhishek began looked in a good touch, as he smashed four boundaries and provided early momentum. However, his promising innings ended at 19 off 14 balls when he mistimed a lofted shot off Nathan Ellis and was caught at mid-off.
Captain Suryakumar and vice-captain Gill put together a 62 run stand
Gill, meanwhile, calm and in control, cruising to an unbeaten 37 off just 20 balls. His partnership with skipper Suryakumar Yadav yielded 62 runs in only 35 deliveries, which helped India comfortably score 97 for 1 wicket in 9.4 overs before rain interrupted play once more.
For Suryakumar, this knock was more than just a brisk cameo. His unbeaten 39 off 24 deliveries featured two massive sixes, helping him reach a remarkable milestone, 150 sixes in T20 internationals. With this milestone, he became only the fifth player in history to do so, joining the elite list of Rohit Sharma, Muhammad Waseem, Martin Guptill, and Jos Buttler.
2nd T20I is scheduled to be played in Melbourne
Although rain prevented India from finishing strongly, the camaraderie between Gill and Abhishek, along with Suryakumar’s solid return to form, offered several positives for the team. The action now moves to Melbourne, where both teams will be hoping for clear skies and a complete game on Friday.
