What caused Devonte Les’s death? 

Devonte Lee was battling osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. According to reports from The Times of India and local outlet KTVE, he was first diagnosed in 2022 after experiencing severe back pain. Shortly after, he was transferred to Louisiana Tech. The diagnosis marked the beginning of a difficult medical journey.

He was treated with two surgeries, chemotherapy and seven weeks of radiation. Despite the physical toll, Devonta was committed to recovery and rehabilitation. In 2023, he was declared cancer-free and soon returned to the football field for the 2024 season. The player’s return was a comeback that earned admiration across the Louisiana sports community. However, later his cancer returned, and Devonta continued his fight in private with the support of family and friends. His mother, Lacresia Brown, confirmed that he ultimately died due to the disease and penned:

“He was a fighter, and he loved everybody.”

Lacresia Brown admitted in an emotional statement shared with KTVE about her son’s death. She described him as “a good kid” who would “do anything for anybody.” According to her, even during his illness, the 27-year-old continued to work out regularly and stayed mentally strong. She explained how he gave his all in anything he did and was a “very hard, dedicated player” who “never gave up in football.”

Devonte Lee’s family and early life

Devonte Lee’s life story was shaped by his humble beginnings in Fluker, Louisiana. He often shared how he grew up in challenging situations, but his family, especially his mother, was his greatest motivation. In turn, she often acknowledged and has previously shared that her son’s work ethic was driven by his desire to support his loved ones and create a better future. 

Devonta studied at Amite High School, a program known for producing top-tier football talent. While studying, he helped to lead the team to a 2A State Championship in 2018. According to his friends and coaches, the 27-year-old was disciplined, focused, and deeply loyal to his community. At the same time, his mother highlighted how he was kind beyond the field, and his character mattered just as much as his athletic ability.

Devonta Lee began his collegiate career at LSU in 2019. He first joined the Tigers during a historic season. Eventually, he became a part of the team that captured the 2019 national championship. The achievement was one of the highlights of Devonta’s football journey. After playing for three seasons, he had 11 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown. Later, he went to Louisiana Tech, where he appeared in three games across two seasons before and after his initial cancer diagnosis. Overall in his college career, he had recorded 13 receptions for 129 yards and one touchdown. Subsequently, LSU Football and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have honoured him after his death. Sharing their condolences, LSU football penned: 

“The LSU Football family mourns the loss of former Tiger, Devonta Lee. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”
