Following his team’s upset loss to VCU in the first round of March Madness, North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis’ job security has been up in the air. But it would cost the Tar Heels a pretty penny to get rid of him.
According to Davis’ contract with UNC, the school would owe the coach $5.312 million if it decided to fire him on April 1.
University records viewed by The Post show Davis’ base salary with the Tar Heels is $1.25 million, with his contract running through June 30, 2030.

In addition to his base salary, Davis also earned $1.8 million in supplemental pay for this season, with that part of his compensation increasing by $100,000 each year until his contract expires, according to USA Today.
Outside of his contract, Davis also earns $50,000 in annual expenses from UNC, along with yearly payments from Nike and Learfield Sports, which add up to an additional $700,000, the outlet reported.
Davis, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA after being drafted by the Knicks in 1992, has been at the helm of the Tar Heels since 2021.
Following the crushing 82-78 overtime loss to the Rams on Thursday, Davis was nearly at a loss for words when a reporter asked him what went wrong.

“What do you mean?” Hubert said to a rather straightforward question.
Davis later gave a longer response, but still struggled to really explain how the Tar Heels blew a 19-point lead.
“Just because you miss a shot doesn’t mean something’s wrong. We had open looks, we had shots at the basket, we had executed plays and we missed eight free throws. Sometimes the ball doesn’t go in,” Davis added. “You really want to compliment VCU, their resiliency in being down 19 to keep trying to find a way.
“Also felt like just the small details in order to come back, they have to be good enough and resilient enough to do that and VCU was, but also believe that there were mistakes made that helped them come back and that at times we’ve done that all year.”
