What we learned from Giants’ Week 7 loss: Anatomy of a historical meltdown

Snatching defeat from the throes of victory is not easy to do but the Giants found a way. And as a result, they left Denver with a hard-to-fathom 33-32 loss that was historical in the way they collapsed in a complete fourth-quarter meltdown on defense.

Here are a few aspects of the game that require further scrutiny:

— Two pass plays on the final drive doomed the Giants and we need to get something straight about how they lined up on defense on those two plays. It is true that defensive coordinator Shane Bowen sat back on the first one and that basically opened the door for the Broncos to get their game-winning points. It is not true that Bowen sat back on the second fateful pass completion.

The first one was bad enough. The Broncos had the ball on their own 23-yard line with 33 seconds remaining. The Broncos did not have any timeouts to work with. On first down, Bowen sent just three rushers at Bo Nix: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Roy Robertson-Harris. For some reason, rookie edge rusher Abdul Carter was not on the field. Robertson-Harris has never been recognized as much of a pass rusher. Dexter Lawrence was not on the field. Predictably, the three rushers did not apply any pressure to the pocket and Nix had all the time he needed to locate Marvin Mims for a gain of 29 yards. Cornerback Dru Phillips was in coverage and did not make the play to prevent the completion.
