In a small village in Piplodi, a tragedy changed the course of education for dozens of children overnight. When the roof of a government school collapsed, seven young lives were lost, and with it, nearly 90 tribal families lost their only access to a nearby classroom. As the village came to terms with the loss, the question of what would happen to the children’s education remained unanswered.
Among those watching closely was 60-year-old farmer Mor Singh, who had never been to school himself but understood its value deeply. As days passed and no immediate solution emerged, he found himself thinking about the children who would now have nowhere to go. Within just two days of the incident, he made a decision that would quietly reshape the village’s future.
Singh chose to give up his only home and turn it into a classroom so that learning could continue without interruption. The house, built over four years through careful savings, had been meant for his family’s stability, yet he saw a more urgent need in that moment. As he opened its doors to children, he moved out with his family of eight, including his young grandson, and set up a temporary life in a plastic jhuggi beside their field with only basic essentials.
Chalking the future of 75 kids
Inside that same home, 50 to 75 children now gather each day, sitting together to study and regain a sense of routine after the disruption. While rebuilding the school is expected to take over a year, the nearest alternative remains a difficult 2 km trek through uneven terrain, making daily attendance challenging for younger students. In stepping forward when he did, Singh ensured that this gap did not turn into a permanent setback.
His act has since drawn wider attention, with the government awarding him Rs 2 lakh and announcing Rs 1.8 crore for a new school and village infrastructure. Even so, for Singh, the focus remains on the present moment, where a space he once called home now holds the hopes of many children continuing their education.
