Who Is Heather Ammel? About Kyrsten Sinema’s Bodyguard’s Wife Amid Legal Battle Over Their Affair

U.S Senator, Kyrsten Sinema’s high-profile legal dispute with her bodyguard, Matthew Ammel’s wife, Heather, has drawn national attention since the beginning of 2026. It all began after Heather Ammel filed a lawsuit to accuse the politician of interfering in her marriage. While she had claimed that Kyrsten and Matthew’s bond made her 14-year marriage hit a rock, the politician has now argued against North Carolina’s rare “alienation of affection” law, which allows a spouse to sue a third party accused of damaging a marriage. Amid the same, here’s what we know about Heather Ammel. 

Who is Heather Ammel?

Heather Ammel has mostly lived a private life away from the public spotlight. But she immediately rose to the headlines after she filed a case against Kyrsten Sinema, claiming Sinema was the third party in their bond and the reason behind the end of her marriage with her husband, Matthew Ammel. According to court filings cited by The Washington Post, she resides in Raeford, North Carolina, raising her three kids. For those unaware, she married Matthew Ammel in 2010, and together they welcomed three children: daughters Clara and Isla, and a son, James.

According to the legal documents, Heather Ammel has been a ‘dedicated spouse’ and a mother who spent most of her time caring for their children. On the other hand, Matthew Ammel is a decorated former United States Army Green Beret. He completed his multiple combat deployments before retiring in 2022. After his exit from the military, he joined the private security industry and eventually was recruited to work on Kyrsten’s security detail.

WRAL stated that court filings by Heather Ammel revealed her marriage began to suffer in 2024. Incidentally, it was soon after her husband, Matthews, began to work closely with Kyrsten Sinema. Eventually, the couple separated in November 2024 after Matthew returned from an overseas work trip to Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, he moved out of their family home. However, later in March 2025, Heather filed for divorce due to verbal and emotional abuse alongside his alleged affair with Kyrsten Sinema. 

How has Kyrsten Sinema responded to Heather Ammel’s claims? 

Kyrsten Sinema has recently filed a response to Heather Ammel’s allegations, admitting that she had a romantic relationship with her bodyguard, Matthew Ammel. According to legal documents cited by FOX 10 Phoenix, the relationship began in May 2024, several months before Matthew separated from his wife. Kyrsten’s lawyers noted that their relationship became “romantic and intimate” during that period. The court also stated that the encounters between them occurred in multiple cities, including Sonoma, New York City, Washington, D.C., Aspen, and Phoenix.

However, Kyrsten argued that the claims should not be considered because her relationship did not occur there; North Carolina is one of the few states that still permit alienation of affection lawsuits. So her attorneys contend that, because the alleged encounters occurred outside the state, the court lacks jurisdiction over the case.

Why did Heather Ammel allege charges against Kyrsten Sinema? 

Heather Ammel’s lawsuit accuses Kyrsten Sinema of intentionally interfering in her marriage and contributing to its collapse. According to the Guardian, she alleged that Kyrsten knowingly pursued a relationship with Matthew while he was still married. Heather also claimed she found encrypted messages between her husband and Kyrsten that were sent via Signal. According to the filing, these communications included romantic and explicit exchanges.

Moreover, the lawsuit alleges that Kyrsten gave Matthew gifts and took him on trips and outings during the relationship. Another claim in the complaint suggests that she encouraged Matthew to experiment with psychedelic substances during work trips, although Kyrsten has denied sending certain messages referenced in the suit. After all these charges, Heather has sought at least USD 75,000 in damages for emotional distress and financial hardship owing to the end of her marriage.
