Na’Ziyah Harris’ highly-publicised death has come into focus once again after the death of her convicted killer, Jarvis Butts. He was allegedly grooming her and killed the 13-year-old, while she was allegedly expecting his child, shocking the local community. As the investigators continue to look into the situation surrounding his death, let’s know everything about Na’Ziyah Harris’ case.

Who was Na’Ziyah Harris? 

According to USA Today, a 13-year-old girl, Na’Ziyah Harris, went missing on January 9, 2024, after she got off her school bus near Cornwall Street in Detroit. She was last seen wearing a colourful jacket, glasses, and sneakers. Initially, it appeared to be a missing-person case to the cops, but the situation quickly escalated when investigators found that she had been in contact with Jarvis Butts. He was a 43-year-old man who was known to her family, making him a familiar figure. 

The prosecutors in the case alleged that Jarvis Butts was the father of Na’Ziyah Harris’s cousins, and he had been grooming her since 2022. When the investigation progressed, they found more evidence about how Na’Ziyah had to face long-term sexual abuse at his hands. Some reports claimed that the teen might have been pregnant before her disappearance, which investigators believe was the reason behind her death. 

Additionally, some digital evidence presented in court showed that Jarvis had searched for abortion-related methods on the internet before the incident, strengthening the prosecution’s claims. Although Na’Ziyah’s dead body has not yet been found, the law enforcement officials stated that clothing similar to the description related to her last appearance was found near the Rouge River, hinting that it is a possible crime scene.

What happened to Jarvis Butts? 

Jarvis Butts was sentenced on March 12, 2026, after he admitted to second-degree murder and multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct involving minors. However, a shocking update followed on March 26, 2026, that stated that he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson, Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Corrections stated that staff discovered him without a pulse around 6:45 a.m. and tried to save his life, but they could not help him. Meanwhile, the authorities have begun a complete investigation of the incident, but have kept the specific details about his death under wraps. Sharing an official statement, the authorities said:

“MDOC staff provided life-saving measures which were unsuccessful. The Michigan State Police have been called to the facility to investigate; the death is currently being reported as a suicide.” 

What will happen in the Na’Ziyah Harris case now? 

After Jarvis Butts’ death, the focus has shifted back to Na’Ziyah Harris’ case. Her remains are still missing, and Jarvis agreed in his plea that he would give information about the location of her body. Until now, authorities have believed his information was credible. According to law enforcement officials, their search operations are particularly focused on areas around the Rouge River. At the same time, investigators are examining whether any warning signs were missed or failures occurred that could have prevented the crime.
