Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old Spanish woman from Barcelona, became the subject of a landmark legal and ethical debate after successfully fighting for her right to die through voluntary euthanasia. She passed away on March 26, 2026, at a long-term care facility in Sant Pere de Ribes. Noeila’s request for euthanasia was based on a prolonged period of suffering from physical and mental issues, stemming from a tragic incident. As the case gained worldwide attention, Indian netizens started comparing it with a recently deceased young man named Harish Rana. Read to know the reason behind it.

Who was Noelia Castillo Ramos? Why did she decide to undergo euthanasia?

Noelia Castillo Ramos (2000–2026) was a 25-year-old Spanish woman from Barcelona who legally fought, won the case and earned her right to choose when to end her life through euthanasia. Her request for assisted dying was granted following a traumatic series of events and a nearly two-year legal battle against her father. She died at a long-term care facility in Barcelona. Noelia was molested by one of her ex-boyfriends, and then she fell victim to a gang rape in a state-supervised centre in 2022. Following those incidents, Noeila was emotionally so shaken that she attempted to end her life by jumping from a fifth-floor window.

Noelia survived the fall but was left with paraplegia and suffered from constant neuropathic pain and sensory disorders. Beyond her physical injuries, she faced severe mental health challenges, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and borderline personality disorder. Thus, she wanted to end her suffering by dying.

Why is Noelia Castillo Ramos’ case compared with that of Harish Rana’s?

The cases of Noelia Castillo Ramos and Harish Rana are being compared because they both reached their conclusions within the same week in March 2026, serving as landmark legal precedents for the right to die in their respective countries. While Noelia’s case involved active euthanasia (lethal injection) in Spain, Harish’s case involved passive euthanasia (withdrawal of life support) in India.

Who was Harish Rana? Why did he decide to undergo euthanasia?

Harish Rana was a 31-year-old B.Tech student who became a landmark figure in Indian law as the first person to be legally granted passive euthanasia. He passed away at AIIMS Delhi on March 24, 2026 after the Supreme Court authorised the withdrawal of his life-sustaining medical treatment. In August 2013, while studying engineering at Panjab University, he suffered a catastrophic fall from a fourth-floor balcony. The fall resulted in a diffuse axonal injury, leaving him in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) with 100 percent quadriplegia.

For over 13 years, Harish remained unresponsive, bedridden, and dependent on a PEG tube for nutrition and a tracheostomy for breathing. His parents, Ashok Rana and Nirmala Devi, cared for him for over a decade, even selling their home to fund his medical expenses. The decision to seek passive euthanasia was made by his parents on his behalf because multiple medical boards had already let them know that there was no chance of Harish’s recovery. While the Delhi High Court initially rejected their plea in 2024 because Harish wasn’t on a ventilator, the Supreme Court ruled in March 2026 that clinically assisted nutrition and hydration (feeding tubes) also constitute medical treatment that can be legally withdrawn.

In contrast to Harish’s case, Noelia Castillo Ramos herself decided to undergo euthanasia, going against her family’s wishes. Her father, Geronimo Castillo led a 601-day legal campaign against his daughter’s euthanasia plea, supported by the conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers). He argued that Noeila lacked the mental capacity to make such a big decision due to her diagnosed personality disorder. Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, also publicly disagreed with her choice of euthanasia; however, she tried to respect her daughter’s autonomy. Ultimately, the Spanish courts ruled in Noelia’s favour, leading to the procedure being undertaken.
