Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has his reasons for not wanting to get married.
During an appearance on Bobbi Althoff’s “Not This Again” podcast, Durant explained that he “doesn’t know” if he could be with one person in a marriage for the rest of his life.
“That’s not really a prenup, though. I mean, because you still have to, when you walk away, at least give something,” Durant said when Althoff asked about a pre-nuptial agreement.
“… I think divorce is more realistic cuz the divorce percentage is higher… That’s forever though and you’re banking on that being 50/50. I don’t know if I want to take those odds.
“… It’s like the word marriage, like what the relationship is, like do I want to be with this somebody every day and hang [out] with the same person every day.
“… I have never really dreamt of having a wedding day… When I go to a wedding, it’s like ‘oh this is cool, oh it’s dope’… It’s not like it needs to happen in my mind. But [a wedding] is still a cool event.”
However, Durant is keeping an open mind.
“I’m sure that it may happen,” he said. “I’m not closing the door on nothing, but I’m not expecting it is all I’m saying.”
Durant, who said “I thought was close” to marriage before, explained that he’s “not actually looking for anything” serious at the moment.
“Just somebody I can hang out with everyday, somebody I can talk to that’s cool, you know the basics, somebody I can really be friends with. And not look at it as if [it’s girlfriend-boyfriend],” Durant said.
“That expectation that title, it’s that cloud that comes with that instead of us just being natural friends. No expectations is better for me because sometimes I might not want to talk to you or see you.”
Durant added that he previously lived with a woman, but they went their separate ways.
“We naturally needed to go our separate ways for a second and figure ourselves out,” Durant, who did share a name, said. “We remain friends and still kick it.”
Durant is fairly private about his personal life.
The NBA star got engaged to former Lynx star Monica Wright in 2013, after they reportedly met in 2006 at a high school All-Star game — but they called it off shortly after.
Wright, a former NBA exec, went on to marry former professional basketball player Michael Rogers.
