One of Malayalam cinema’s most eagerly awaited films of the year, Patriot, has run into an unexpected hurdle ahead of its scheduled release. The Mahesh Narayanan directorial, which brings together industry heavyweights Mohanlal, Mammootty and Fahadh Faasil, was earlier announced to hit theatres on April 23. However, a dispute between the film’s producer and theatre owners in Kerala has now cast doubt over whether the film will arrive in cinemas as planned.
The issue revolves around a proposed change in the revenue sharing agreement between producers and exhibitors. Reports suggest that the film’s producer, Anto Joseph, circulated an agreement to theatre owners proposing a different model for sharing the film’s theatrical earnings during its opening weeks.
Disagreement over revenue sharing model
According to reports, the agreement sent by Anto Joseph proposes that the film’s theatrical collections be split in a 60:40 ratio between the producer and exhibitors for the first fourteen days of its run. The proposal departs from the revenue sharing structure that is currently followed by most Malayalam releases.
The Film Exhibitors’ United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) has strongly objected to this change. The exhibitors’ body maintains that the suggested terms violate the existing agreement used across the industry.
Speaking about the issue, FEUOK president K Vijayakumar explained that the current system follows a staggered revenue pattern. Under this model, the producer receives 60 per cent of the collection during the first week while theatre owners take the remaining share. The ratio then shifts to 55:45 in the second week and eventually to 50:50 in the third week.
Vijayakumar stated that the proposed agreement alters this structure in a way that could negatively impact theatre owners. As a result, the organisation has reportedly warned its members against signing the new agreement.
Exhibitors take a firm stand
The exhibitors’ body has taken a strong position in the matter. Vijayakumar revealed that FEUOK has advised theatre owners across Kerala not to accept the agreement circulated by the film’s producer. According to him, allowing such a change could hurt the financial stability of exhibitors, particularly at a time when several recent Malayalam releases have struggled to perform strongly at the box office.
He further stated that Patriot would not be screened in theatres affiliated with FEUOK if the producer insists on implementing the revised revenue sharing model. This stance effectively puts the film’s Kerala theatrical release in jeopardy unless both sides reach a compromise.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Film Producers’ Association has said that it has not received any formal complaint regarding the issue so far. Association president B Rakesh suggested that the request from the producer could be linked to the film’s scale and budget.
Rakesh noted that large productions often require different financial arrangements to recover costs. He also added that theatre owners could review the proposal and decide whether adjustments to the existing model are necessary.
Despite the current uncertainty, Patriot continues to generate massive interest among audiences. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the espionage thriller features a star-studded ensemble including Mohanlal, Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil and several other prominent actors. The film has been widely discussed in industry circles for bringing together multiple leading stars in a single narrative.
For now, the focus shifts to whether the dispute can be resolved before the scheduled release date. If negotiations between the producer and exhibitors reach common ground soon, the film may still arrive in theatres as planned. Otherwise, one of the most anticipated Malayalam releases of the year could face an unexpected delay.
