Trump has stated that he hopes to expand Abraham Accords soon.
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump is pressuring Saudi Arabia to normalise relations with Israel. However, this is unlikely to happen during Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the USA. Mohammed bin Salman is scheduled to make a formal visit to the White House this month. His visit is considered very significant for US-Saudi Arabia relations. Israel and Saudi Arabia have a decades-old rivalry. If Trump establishes diplomatic relations between the two countries, it could change the political and security landscape of the Middle East and further strengthen the US’s influence in the region.
Will Saudi Arabia sign Abraham Accords?
Trump said last month that he hoped Saudi Arabia would “very soon” join other Muslim countries that signed the 2020 Abraham Accords, normalising relations with Israel. But Riyadh has signalled to Washington through diplomatic channels that its stance has not changed: it will sign only if a roadmap for Palestinian statehood is agreed upon. They said the aim was to avoid diplomatic mistakes and ensure alignment between Saudi and US positions before any public statement.
Saudi Arabia reiterates conditions for friendship with Israel
A source said the aim was to avoid any confusion during or after the White House talks on November 18. Jonathan Panikoff, a former deputy US National Intelligence officer for the Middle East, said Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince is “unlikely to formalise relations in the near future without at least a credible path to Palestinian statehood.” Panikoff is now at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington. He said MBS will likely use his influence with Trump to try to secure “more explicit and vocal support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.”
Trump is enthusiastic about Abraham Accords
Next week’s visit marks Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s first visit to Washington since the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was a vocal critic of the Crown Prince and was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. It was alleged that Saudi agents killed Khashoggi on the Crown Prince’s orders. The murder sparked global outrage. However, the Saudi prince denied any direct involvement.
What did Trump say about Abraham Accords?
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Morocco have already normalised relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords. Meanwhile, Trump has stated that he hopes to expand these agreements soon. On November 5, without giving a timeframe, he said, “Many people are joining the Abraham Accords now, and hopefully we’ll have Saudi Arabia joining them very soon.”
