Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has had to take his pet pooch Jean to the vet after an emergency

Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has rushed his pet pooch to the vet after she fell ill. The actor – who played Billy Mayhew on the ITV soap until his character’s death during the Corriedale special earlier this year – revealed his pooch was poorly.

In a post shared on Instagram, Daniel updated his followers as he wrote: “Emergency vet’s trip with Jean this morning. She’s in safe hands with the Animal Trust Vets team. Their care is second to none.”

Daniel is a dog lover and regularly shares pictures with his pet pooches. Last year, he shared a sweet picture of him cradling the pet, where he wrote: “Jean & I on a cold December Monday evening, snuggled up in front of the fire glued to this book. Can’t put it down!”

The actor departed his role in explosive Corriedale scenes, which saw Billy killed in an explosion after his love rival Theo saw to the end of the vicar for good. In a video posted to Coronation Street’s Instagram page to mark his exit, he said: “Hello, it’s Daniel Brocklebank here. Gosh, I can’t believe I’m sat here recording my goodbyes. Not just goodbyes, but thank yous. I’d like to thank everybody at Coronation Street for the last 11 years. They have been, and will always be, such a special part of my life.

“I have loved every minute of being Billy, I have loved every minute of walking into this building. And to you guys at home watching, thank you for the love and support for my little special character over the time that I have been here. I will miss you all. Lots of love.”

In a lengthy interview, Daniel explained how he felt it was “time” for him to leave the ITV soap after a “colourful” 11 years on the soap. He said: “I’d spoken to my other half and said ‘maybe it’s time,’ As an actor, I enjoy being challenged and I was very quiet in the last year there. After the Motor Neurone Disease storyline, which is probably the thing I’m most proud of, I wondered really what was left for Billy. He could drift into another relationship, his daughter Summer could get married and he could become a grandfather.

“But that MND storyline with his husband Paul had such an impact, that I couldn’t work out what could happen to him that hadn’t already been done. He’d been a drug addict, he’d adopted a child, got married, had the first ever same sex wedding on the show and lost his husband. It’s not like he hadn’t packed it in – it’s been quite a colourful 11 years.”

He explained that there was a “whole world happening outside of that Weatherfield bubble” and how bosses had crafted an exit storyline for him, which they insisted was the only reason he was leaving.

“It is just a job at the end of the day and there’s no character bigger than the show. We only get a contract for a year at a time and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would expect to be there for life, because I think you’re possibly setting yourself up for a fall. Shows evolve and new producers want to bring in new characters and exit characters that they feel have had their time; that’s the nature of it,” he said as he spoke about his exit in detail for the first time.

“What was really lovely was that when it was announced in the press, I had lots of messages from producers and directors I’d worked with in the past saying, ‘this is great news, when are you free? I’ve got this coming up and I’ll be thinking of you for that.’ That was nice; I’d not been forgotten by those people.”
