The new owners of Atletico Madrid have been confirmed as minority investors in Wrexham football club.
Apollo Sports Capital (ASC) last month became majority shareholders in Spanish giants Atletico, with the deal set to be formalised in the new year.
They have now opted to inject cash into Wrexham in a deal that will see the club’s celebrity figureheads Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney remain as controlling owners of the Championship club.
There are no details on the amount of investment or the shareholding being acquired by ASC, although it is thought to be less than a 10% stake.
The move will also provide further financing for ongoing development of the club’s Stok Cae Ras home.
In a joint statement, Reynolds and McElhenney said: “The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”
The ASC chief executive, Al Tylis, is known to both Reynolds and McElhenny from other investments – including a small ownership in Mexican club Necaxa.
Tylis was appointed in September as part of Apollo’s expansion into sport. The parent company claims to have more than US $900bn (£675bn) of assets under management, with plans set out to invest $5bn (£3.75bn) in the sporting sector.
It is the second time the Hollywood pair have invited in minority investment since their 2021 Wrexham after the arrival of the Allyn Family in October 2024, who acquired a stake of around 15% in the north Wales club.
ASC’s chief strategy officer, Sam Porter, is a former director at Swansea City.
