Yankees ‘pretty high’ on powerful Brent Headrick as he fights for bullpen spot: ‘Think he’s legit’

FORT MYERS, Fla. — If the Yankees want the funk, they have it in their two left-handers who are virtual locks to make the bullpen, Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough, two of the slowest throwers in the game.

But if they want some power from the left side, meet Brent Headrick.

The 6-foot-6 lefty reliever flashed at times last season — when the Yankees were still trying to figure out how to best use the former starter — to the point that Aaron Boone said Friday “there was a strong case that he could’ve/should’ve been on our postseason roster.”

Instead, Hill was their only lefty and Headrick got an early start to his offseason — his first as a full-time reliever — before arriving at camp feeling the best he has in his career, in a strong position to fight for a job in the bullpen.
