There are nights when you need the Player of the Year to do Player of the Year things. St. John’s needed Zuby Ejiofor to do Player of the Year things Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. It was senior night, always an unpredictable emotional barometer (even in a time in college basketball when seniors at big-time programs are rarer than spotted owls).
The crowd, 14,319 strong, was subdued, almost funereal. The Johnnies matched that energy, or lack thereof, looking flatter than I-80 when you cruise through Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats (look it up, kids!) for most of the first three quarters of the game.
The Johnnies looked primed to fall.
Georgetown’s Hoyas looked eager to topple them.
